Driving Abroad

Whilst thousands of people drive abroad and do so safely and without incident, you would still be well advised to plan and prepare for your trip. Below are a number of points that you should consider to make sure your journey is a safe and happy one.

Planning

There are a number of things you should check before you drive overseas:

  • Are you covered by your current insurance policy
  • What side of the road do they drive on?
  • Familiarise yourself with the driving laws, particularly areas like speed limits
  • Do you need an International Driving Permit?
  • Get your vehicle serviced to ensure it's in top condition
  • Do you have adequate cover in case of an emergency breakdown
  • Plan your route and check to see if there are any potential tricky parts
  • Check to see if your route involves toll roads, and find out the ways you can pay
  • If you are hiring a vehicle, are you allowed to take it overseas?

Whilst Driving Overseas

  • Take your time and don't be rushed into maneuvers you wouldn't normally take
  • Ensure you have enough fuel in the tank to reach your destination or until you can refill
  • Be vigilant and think twice about stopping if someone indicates you should, car jacking is not unheard of
  • Make user you're carrying all necessary licenses and documents that you need to
  • Keep a spare set of keys with other parties of the group
  • Remember which side of the road you are driving on particularly after taking a break and at junctions
  • Carry first aid kits and basic emergency items like torches with you

General Tips

It can be better to take you own car abroad as it will be more familiar to you. If you do, remember you will need to display a 'GB' badge, if it's not shown on your number plate, and if driving on the right and side of the road, you will need to use light deflector stickers on your headlights.

If hiring a car whilst overseas, ensure that it is with a well known and reputable company such as Hertz, Avis or Enterprise.

Do not be tempted to drive long distances, or whilst tired. Driving overseas takes extra concentration than at home and you will feel quickly fatigued increasing the chances of an incident.
